Renewable energy, particularly heat pumps, has been a hot news topic over the past few months. Countries worldwide are taking action to become greener and reduce their carbon footprint.
As of today, more than 130 countries have set or are considering the target of reducing their emissions to net-zero by 2050, with the UK being one of those.
In this article, you’ll find the most up to date heat pump news from around the world as of May 2022.

The 2025 Boiler Ban
The initial steps of the UK boiler ban come into play in 2025. Although not directly related to heat pumps, the boiler ban will push UK homeowners to look into renewable heating systems.
By 2035 the UK government hopes to phase out all boilers. Heat pumps are a central focus at the minute, and the aim for 2030 is to bring down the cost of installation to make them more accessible for everyone.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme
Energy production contributes to around 73% of emissions, with energy use in buildings at about 17.5%. With the UK government's mission to hit the net zero emissions target by 2050, they needed a strategy to get more homeowners on board.
The initial upfront cost is the main deterrent of renewable heating systems like heat pumps.
The new Boiler Upgrade Scheme launched in April 2022 offers up to a £5000 grant to cover the upfront costs of renewable energy systems, including ground source and air source heat pumps.
This new scheme was brought out in replacement of the Renewable Heat Incentive, which closed end of March 2022.
New Heat Pump Showroom
Daikin has launched a heat pump showroom called ‘The Daikin Sustainable Home Centre’ in Shrewsbury.
The showroom aims to provide an advice hub for homeowners and a heat pump training centre for installers looking to diversify into renewable energy.
Heat Pumps to be Added to Listed Buildings in London
The Crown Estate and the Duke’s property business, Grosvenor Group, are lobbying to have new regulations regarding installing heat pumps in listed buildings.
Currently, it is a long and expensive process. The Grosvenor Group stated, "Around 500,000 buildings in England are protected by statutory listing, and hundreds of thousands more are situated in conservation areas”.
“Adapting these buildings to be more energy-efficient and reducing their environmental impact is a complicated and costly process."
If the policy goes ahead, we could see some of the most historic buildings in the UK installing heat pumps.
New Heat Pump Training Course
German heat pump manufacturer, Stiebel Eltron, has launched ‘Heat Pump Pass’, an online training video that teaches experts in the heating and ventilation industry the technical aspects of installing heat pumps.
The 5-hour training course aims to keep up with the new demand and train the up and coming engineers on the ins and outs of heat pump installation.

Netherland Bans Fossil Heating from 2026
In just four years' time, the Netherlands will make heat pumps a mandatory system in all homes by banning all fossil heating.
As of 2026 any buildings that a newly built or need extensive renovations, that include the heating system must use hybrid heat pumps.
According to estimates of the Dutch government, they’ll be able to save up to 60% on natural gas consumption, which will have massive effects on their carbon footprint.
New Heat Pump Bill to be Announced in the US
In the coming weeks, a new bill will be announced in the senate that will give manufacturers tax credits between $600 and $1000 per machine, which can be spent on the production of heat pumps.
The aim is to drive down the prices of heat pumps to encourage more homeowners to install them over using gas and air conditioning (ground source heat pumps can be used as cooling systems and heating).
There’s no doubt that heat pumps are the next big thing (if they aren’t already) across the world.
